The Rolex Milgauss, unfortunately, made its debut around the same time when some of the legendary models of the horology industry arrived such as the iconic Rolex Submariner, Rolex GMT-Master, and the Day-Date.
However, this underrated Rolex watch has its own extraordinary qualities. Rolex developed the Milgauss to keep precise time in the presence of electromagnetic fields. During a time of high-tech electronic devices, creating strong magnetic forces, having a watch that can combat prolonged exposure to magnetic fields became inevitable.
With that mind, Rolex designed and unleashed the Milgauss in the middle of 1950s for the scientists and engineers. The Rolex Reference 6543 was the first Milgauss to make its debut in 1954. Moreover, the watch was tested by the scientists of the European Organization for Nuclear Research – CERN.
Let’s take a look at four of the Rolex Milgauss watches available in the brand’s catalogue that is treasured for their striking design and exclusive functionalities.
Rolex Milgauss Reference 6543
You will be fascinated to know that the ever first Rolex Milgauss was a refined edition of the original Turn-O-Graph. Also, the watch looked virtually similar to the then-newly launched Submariner.
- Like the Rolex Sub, the Milgauss featured a black rotating bezel along with a three-link Oyster bracelet.
- The watch featured a 38mm case framing a black dial. And Rolex offered only one dial colour option at the time.
- However, the dial flaunted a honeycomb pattern and the name “Milgauss” engraved in red.
The Milgauss Reference 6543 was given to the scientists of CERN for testing. They confirmed the ability of the timepiece to combat magnetic fields in over 1,000gauss.
Moreover, the Rolex Milgauss 6541 was powered by Calibre 1080.

Rolex Milgauss Reference 6541
Encased in stainless steel, the second generation Milgauss 6541 bore pretty similar design traits of the first generation. The watch sported a 38mm stainless steel case, rotating black bezel and a black dial.
- Although the dial flaunted the same honeycomb pattern, it has one small upgrade.
- Instead of straight seconds-hand, the Milgauss 6541 featured a lightning bolt, representing the antimagnetic abilities of the watch.
However, Rolex also offered another version of the reference 6541 with a fixed smooth bezel. The Calibre 1080 movement powered the Rolex Milgauss 6541.
Rolex Milgauss Reference 1019
Finally, Rolex gave the Milgauss a specific look for the first time and introduced the Reference 1019.
However, the watch flaunted a too conservative design in comparison to its precursors.
- The Milgauss Reference 1019 came with a fixed smooth bezel, silver or black dial with standard baton hour markers.
- The dial lost the honeycomb styling, and a straight, arrow-tipped seconds-hand replaced the symbolic lightning bolt hand as found in the reference above.
Moreover, Rolex also switched the movement in this Milgauss edition. The Calibre 1580 movement continued to power the watch throughout its production run, from 1960 to 1988.
Rolex Milgauss Reference 116400
In 2007, Rolex launched the Milgauss Reference 116400 to commemorate the release of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
- The watch featured a new case of 40mm, made up of 904L stainless steel (also known as “Oystersteel”).
- However, the brand equipped the Reference 116400 with a two-half shield, forged out of exclusive ferromagnetic metals. It encircles as well as protects the movement.
Interestingly, the timepiece flaunted the engraving “B” with an arrow on it at the top, symbolising the density of magnetic flux.
